The declaration of Independence states that, “All men deserve equal rights”. Why not women? This question raised American women in the 19th century, impacted the role of women today. Over the past years, social and legal changes have been accomplished for women. The staggering improvements for women that have come about over generations in government, employment, education, religion, and family life. However, these changes did not occur overnight, women themselves made these changes happen. Over centuries, American women agitated for their rights to improve their political and economic status, which led to a changes in legal and social relations, with political relations emerging later.

Looking at the Declaration of Sentiments by Elizabeth Cady Stanton outlined series of dissatisfaction of women, and proposed resolution that all women had equality in all aspects of their lives (Stanton 8). The style of this document corresponds to the declaration of independence, asserting that the hardships of women were as important and equal as the men, who faced during the British rule. The parallel structure exposes all the reproval on men, and how he has permitted her to do her duties. The usage of harsh words, offending them, to take a stand and motivate women to fight for their rights, which recognizes her only when her property can be made profitable.” The stressing of women’s importance considered only when they are profitable gave women the voice to fight for their respect.
