Bloody Mary
Mary Tudor I of England was born on February 18, 1516. She was queen of England from 1553 to 1558. Mary Tudor of England I was merciless trying to restore Catholicism . She executed a great number of Protestants, thus giving her the nickname Bloody Mary after her death.
"Mary Tudor was popular with the people as Queen of England." (Knight). "However, it quickly turned sour because of her marriage and religious changes. Mary Tudor reversed the changes her brother Edward had enforced."(Martyrs). The medieval heresy laws were restored by Parliament, which meant that heretics could be killed. She tried restoring Catholicism by banning Holy Communion. Every priest had to be Catholic and the pope was made head of the church again. She restored the Catholic Mass, banned the Cranmer prayer book, and demanded the services to be held in Latin. Throughout August, September, and October of 1553, most protestant preachers that didn't reform, were seized and condemned to prison. Around 12 thousand clergymen were silenced and many were imprisoned. "English people at this time, feared the power of Spain. Philip II was also a strong Catholic. Although many of Mary's friends warned her not to marry Philip, she went against their advice and married him in 1554." (Mary Tudor - "Bloody Mary). This led Mary to become very unpopular with the people of England. The majority of England accepted these religious changes. However some did not. Some refused to change and they were burned at the stake for heresy. The first executions occurred over a period of five days in early February 1555.
