Research essay I am a new parent and have been told that my child has profound hearing loss. Now, hearing this really upset me, thinking there was something wrong with my child, it scared me. Then I immediately went into “Mom” mode and asked, “What do I do and how do I fix it?” The doctor suggested that I get my child fitted for a cochlear implant. That sounds easy enough but then the questions, what is it? How does it work? What are the benefits and will it hurt my child? All started coming to mind. I had to do some research before I could make a decision.

The external and the middle portion of the ear have conductive hearing, which allows sound to travel through the ear canal of the external ear, and hits the ear drum, causing it to vibrate (Cochlear Implants).
