The Flavian Amphitheatre, otherwise known as the Colosseum, was given its former name thanks to the Flavian dynasty under which it was built. The Colosseum was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 70-72 CE as a gift to the Roman people. Previously this land had been used as a palace for the former emperor Nero. After Nero took his own life, Vespasian returned the land to the Roman people and designated it as a site for entertainment. It is unknown who the actual architect or designer was for the Colosseum.
