Jan van Eyck’s media that was used was oil paints, he had either developed or improved on the oil painting method. He had used the oil paints ability to dry very slowly to his advantage, by adding detail while the paint is still wet. The kind of painting used by van Eyck is Early Renaissance. Early Renaissance is from classical arts and is from Greek and Roman culture.
Van Eyck’s family was made up of artists. He was also appointed court painter for John Bavaria who had later died. Once John had died van Eyck had went and entered under the rule of the powerful and influential Valois prince, Duke Philip. As a painter and a worker for the Duke van Eyck was paid well. Several documents made in the twentieth century tell of van Eyck’s activities with the Duke. The Duke had sent him on many missions and had assigned him several projects which had included more than just painting. There were only two portraits that included only painting. Also, the Duke was one of Jan van Eyck’s children’s, godfather. After the painters death the Duke had helped pay one of van Eycks daughters entry to the
