Atoms and Atomic Theory “An atom is the smallest whole particle of matter” (Fox). Protons are particles that have a positive electric charge and are located in the nucleus. Neutrons are particles in the nucleus that have no electric charge. They are large and heavy. Electrons are particles with a negative charge and are located outside of the nucleus. “The atomic theory is any of several theories describing the structure, behavior, and other properties of the atom and its component parts” (Dictionary.com). Rutherford’s atomic theory was that atoms are mostly open space. There is a small positive nucleus with electrons scattered around the outside. He also discovered protons. While Bohr’s atomic theory was that electrons move in …show more content…
Krypton is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. ”The earth’s atmosphere is about 0.0001% krypton” (Gagnon, Jefferson Lab). It is one of the rarest gases. The symbol is Kr. It is unreactive.
The Atomic number of krypton is 36. The Mass Number is 83.3. Krypton has 36 protons, 48 neutrons, and 36 electrons. “The melting point of krypton is -157.7 °C (-250.96 °F)” (Bentor, Chemical Elements). The boiling point is -153.4 °C (-244.12 °F).
Uses and Isotopes of Krypton
It is currently used in some types of photographic flashes used in high speed photography. Some fluorescent light bulbs are filled with a mixture of krypton and argon gases. When combined with other gases, krypton is used to make luminous signs that glow with a green-yellow light. Krypton-fluorine lasers are a strong scientific tool. The lasers can produce a pulse of energy 500 times as strong as the U.S.’s whole electrical grid in only four billionths of a second. “In July 2014, a record was won for using the krypton-fluorine lasers to accelerate plastic foils of 1000 km/sec in less than a millimeter. Now it’s 1180 km/sec. The purpose is to advance research on nuclear fusion” (Pappas, Live Science). In 1960, the length of the meter was defined in terms of the orange-red spectral line of krypton-86. There are 37 isotopes of krypton. Six of them occur naturally and are stable. Several radioactive isotopes are used in the medical field for diagnosis and anatomic …show more content…
Travers. Ramsay and Travers discovered krypton while studying liquefied air. “Small amounts of liquid krypton remained behind after the more unstable components of liquid air had boiled away” (Gagnon, Jefferson
