Abstract
There are not very many details of the life of Pieter Breugel the Elder that are truly verifiable. Much of the specifies of Bruegel’s narrative are based on the little documentation that can be found mentioning his name, as well as the paintings, drawings and prints attributed to his identity. Starting with early training, Breugel instantly established that he had a distinctive style unparalleled in style, detail, and focus. Traveling around Europe, from the Netherlands to Italy, Bruegel drew on his observations and experiences to broaden his scope and concentration on particular themes. No matter which location Breugel traveled to, he was able to support himself from the high demand for his services. Up until his death, Bruegel continued to create illustrations and paintings that remained unmatched in talent and skill, leading future artists to imitate his style and draw on his works for inspiration.

His personage appears to be as enigmatic and undecipherable as the nameless figures in his paintings. Historians have had to make assumptions and conjectures about his life and travels. Using documents and analyses of his drawings and paintings, his existence has been roughly drawn out. As it is, there are only two documented images attributed to his likeness, and not much can be determined from these illustrations.
