You see them every time you go to the doctor Medical Assistance work with physicians, in medical office and clinics. Medical Assistances are trained to work both administrative and clinical sides of the medical office. Administrative include; using computer applications, answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, and handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping. Clinical include; taking medical histories, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, assisting the physician during exams, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, preforming basic laboratory test, drawing blood, taking electrocardiograms, and removing sutures and changing dressings. When a Medical Assistant performs a skill, they are doing it under the supervision of a physician. The physician is responsible for the actions of the Medical Assistant. But the physician can tell a Medical Assistant to do anything, but it is your job as a Medical Assistant to know what your scope of practice is. Even though the physician has assumed responsible for the Medical Assistant, there are possible sanctions for a Medical Assistant doing something that they are not qualified to do. These sanctions include, but are not limited to Probation, Reprimand, Temporary suspension of the CMA (AAMA) credential, and Permanent suspension of the CMA (AAMA) credential. Having any of these sanctions on you Medical Assistant Record look bad. It may also become harder to find employment. If your certificate is temporary or permanently suspended this mean either for a short term or a long term you can no longer work as a Medical
