Dear Selections Committee, I have been interested in pursuing a career in public service ever since I was six years old when I started Girl Scouts as a Daisy. I grew up learning about the inequalities visible in my town, from those who came weekly to the food shelter to those students in my class who would be pulled about every 6 months so that they could get their teeth cleaned. At this age, I did not fully comprehend the advantages I received from a lower middle-class family and how it would still set me up for success. Being a Girl Scout, I volunteered everywhere, from nursing homes to hospitals, schools to food banks, to even visiting my county’s correctional facility. I have to hear both the responding party’s account as well as the respondent's account and piece together what occurred and help the board members determine responsibility. I have had to both note my own biases and push them aside during cases because it is not fair or just for the people present to have the decision made be slanted because of one thought. Lastly, I am a Residential Assistant at my university, which requires me to both be available to residents if problems arise and to report on those problems as they arise. With this position, I have had to schedule my time and commitments so that I can have both designated hours for residents to stop by as well as the capacity to deal with a situation that may last hours.
