It is hard to survive where freedom is restricted or someone cannot follow his or her interests. Azar Nafisi, an English teacher teaching in university, is the writer of Reading Lolita in Tehran, who went through this censorship and restriction in Tehran, the capital of Iran. She explains her life at that time in this book, and she compares her life with some fiction books. Being consistent and optimistic play main roles in this situation. Fixed mindset means a human being born with a certain amount of ability and intelligence, whereas growth mindset means a human being can improve his or her ability and intelligence. Whoever believe they have ability to improve their brain function and their level of intelligent can be changed, they have growth mindset. As we can see through this book, Azar Nafisi and seven of her students are those who have growth mindset. Even though most of their interests was restricted, they didn’t give up, and they insisted on their goal. Azar Nafisi claims in her book, “Well, it's like this: if you're forced into having sex with someone you dislike, you make your mind blank—you pretend to be somewhere else, you tend to forget your body, you hate your body. That's what we do here. We are constantly pretending to be somewhere else—we either plan it or dream it” (Nafisi 329). She tries to give a good imagination to her readers about how the revolutionary time made them to have dream about their interest. As we see through the book, although this restriction and too many forbidden things, she and her students have growth mindset in pursuing their goal. According to the significance of the grit article which is written by Duckworth, “Grit predicts success over and beyond talent. When you consider individuals of equal talent, the grittier ones do better.” It means talent and intelligence is not as important as grit. Whoever try to stick to his or her goal regardless of some difficult situation might make them disappointed, will get a better result. In Reading Lolita in Tehran, Azar Nafisi and her students did not lose their hope, and regardless of the situation they tried to stick to their interests. According to Reading Lolita in Tehran, “In selecting my students, I did not take into consideration their ideological or religious backgrounds. Later, I would count it as the class’s great achievement that such a mixed group, with different and at times conflicting backgrounds, personal as well as religious and social, remained so loyal to its goals and ideals” (Nafisi 11). Despite Islamic Republic, Azar Nafisi was a women with free mind. She did not care about religious background; she just cared about her students’ interest and motivation.
