One common theme of leadership research is that being a leader involves influencing others. In order to influence others, leaders must be self-confident and make influence attempts which can only be done if the leader possesses some form of power. French and Raven identified five bases of power which include expert power, referent power, legitimate power, reward power and coercive power. According to French and Raven referent and expert power are derived from a more personal influence on followers, while the other power bases stem from the position itself (Yukl, 2013, p. 188-193).
