In the Odyssey, much grief and time would have been saved through mercy. Revenge is typically a bad thing, because it commonly brings about more destruction, and more revenge leading to a viscous cycle, it also rarely makes the person seeking revenge feel better, or allows them to get back what was lost, taken, or whatever was the catalyst for the revenge.

Revenge can take many forms, but no matter what form it takes, revenge can have adverse aftereffects, such as causing more destruction.
