Encouraging open discussions about racism will enable us to “break the system of advantage based on race,” as argued by David Wellman in his book Portraits of White Racism (Tatum, 2003, p.7). In reading chapters one and two in Why are all the Black kids sitting together in the cafeteria? And other conversations about race, I realize white privilege is so embedded in our society, that the vast majority of white people fail to recognize our white-dominate society. As mentioned earlier, sparking conversations on racism will help bring awareness, not only to white people, but people of color as well.
It’s critical to recognize that we often take dominate elements for granted (Tatum, 2003, p.21). For example, in using terms to describe myself,
