Chief Joseph, a man who is highly regarded for his leadership during the immense battle between the American government and the Native tribes that had inhabited the West of America. Addressing the defeat that the Nez Perce tribe had fallen too, Joseph evokes the emotion of submission. Purposely wanting others that read this understand that there isn’t a chance for his people to run, that they’ve been defeated. He heavily sets the tone of mourning down for the readers with his choice of diction, giving the intention of grieving his people that have been slaughtered in this inhumane act administered by the government.
