All writers are entitled to their own approaches to showcasing personal history and connecting with an audience; however, rhetorical devices – parallelism, imagery, and anecdotes – tend to create the most effective and accurate account of these authors’ stories. As seen in an excerpt from Michelle Zauner’s memoir “Crying in H Mart,” she conveys the intense emotions she herself experiences whilst shopping at a store that brings back memories of her mother through vivid imagery and anecdotes of her past in comparison to the present day.
