In early 1903, a time when nationalism swept the nation powered by midwestern and northeastern industry activist Jane Addams delivered a speech at the Chicago Union League Club. The social influencer gave the talk in remembrance and honor of the nation’s first president, George Washington, effectively presenting his achievements and life through rhetorical questioning, conversational yet educational diction and a systematic structure. Addams begins her speech posing the question to her audience of, “What is a great man who has made his mark upon history?” Throughout the following six paragraphs, she asks the listeners ten more questions, not only questioning them but requesting they question themselves. The effect of a question is one incredibly
