Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Virginia Convention Patrick Henry’s Speech to the Virginia Convention is a compelling call to action directed towards the people of America. Its goal is to persuade the American population to fight against Great Britain for independence. Clearly, this speech was persuasive enough to do so. Henry used pathos, an emotional approach, to relate to his audience and influence them to fight for their independence. Americans are tired of Britain’s intrusions in their government and way of life. Henry addresses the issues. “Is it that insidious smile with which our petition has been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it will prove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss.” (Henry 5).
