During the 1980s America had a large inflation rate, unemployment, and high taxes; therefore, people feared a failing economy. As Ronald Reagan began his term as the President of the United States, he knew the people needed a leader who could give them hope and stop the economy from sinking further into depression. On January 20, 1981, Reagan gave his first inaugural address to a people who feared the loss of their freedom. Through his first speech to his nation, he must earn the trust of the people, convince them to follow him as their leader, and motivate them to work together as Americans. Thus, he integrates a large amount of pathos throughout the speech to connect with the listeners, and he justifies his political views through logic.
