The topic of smoking is a widespread phenomenon that is universally discussed and debated. While the image touches on every type of rhetorical appeal, the main ones that hit home are ethos and pathos. The smoke turning into an instrument of self-destruction impacts the viewer with a sense of concern and dismay. The black and white filter on every picture essentially takes the life out of the individual smoking and strengthens the message of negativity and death. The ideas that smoking is a form of suicide and greatly harms the individual and those around them are both strong examples of ethos pathos, and even hints of logos. There is not much logos appeal in the picture. There are no facts presented and there certainly is nothing that proves the harmful effects of smoking. In order to strengthen the point of the picture, the artist should add in little facts about the death and diseases involved with smoking. Kairos is lightly touched only in the sense that smoking is a constant issue that does not appear to be going away anytime soon. Making an argument against smoking can be used at any time and it will be the correct time, given the fact that smoking is such a widespread and perpetual issue in our world
