In the following essay, we will analyze the strategies Debra Marquart uses to characterize and describe the upper Midwest. The upper Midwest is a simple place filled with blandness as described by Marquart, “...you’ll only need to tap your steering wheel to keep your cart on a straight-ahead path.” The reason Marquart includes this is to give the reader an image of how bland and “lonely” the road is, to show how simple navigation is.
