Vonnegut’s Purpose for writing the letter “you have insulted me” is to persuade the school board through the use of rhetorical devices of ethos, pathos, and logos.
To begin, Vonnegut uses ethos to convince the school to change their decision. Vonnegut mentions that he was a combat infantry veteran and had won a purple heart. “Every year I receive at least a dozen invitations to be commencement speaker at colleges and high schools.” This demonstrates that many people adore his writing and works, that they want him to speck and colleges to help teenagers because people look up to him and is a guide light. Vonnegut uses rhetorical strategies such as ethos to coincide with the author’s purpose.
