During the past decades, civil society in the United States has been dwindling, with fewer and fewer families participating in oratorical practices both within their homes, and communities. In order to combat the collapse of this civil society, school curriculum must be changed to enhance the environment for rhetorical practices within families. To effectively reestablish these rhetorical practices, there must be changes to the primary school curriculum specifically. In order to encourage oratory in the home and community, there needs to be a rhetorical competition instated within primary schools, which will, in turn, create the possibility for revitalizing rhetorical practices that were present during colonial and early America. These changes are critical to insert at this level, and these changes are needed in order to address the deteriorating use of oratory in the home. Rhetoric is closely tied with English, and oftentimes students are required to read novels, short stories, and poems in conjunction with the curriculum. The competition would further this activity, requiring students to memorize passages or readings they have studied in the class and deliver them to other students, teachers, and community members. The competition would start in the classroom setting with the top students moving on from each individual class. However, in the upper levels of competition, parents and other community members would be able to watch and support the students. The competition would progress up to the national level, with an overall winner from all the participating grade levels in primary
