The author used rhetoric to convey ideas and attitudes in Into the Wild. In the beginning of the passage, he listed Chris's achievements in his school showing us he is a hard worker and is a smart person. The author also wrote all this in so when Chris goes of the grid it shows us how much he gave up. And when Chris decides to go into the wild, the author uses words such as "odyssey" and "epic journey", showing a positive connotation. "The trip was to be an odyssey in the fullest sense of the word..." When describing the life Chris would have lived, the author used words like "onerous" and "absurd" put a negative light on finishing college and moving on to a job.
