Richard TeLinde a top cervical cancer expert who was trying to find treatments and cures. Telinde worked with Dr. George Gey, who was head of tissue culture at John Hopkins. TeLinde wanted a way to grow living samples from cervical tissue and compare it to cancerous tissues which would allow his to learn more about carcinoma (Skloot 30). Dr. Gey wanted to grow immortal cells. TeLinde would supply Gey with cervical cancer tissue in exchange for trying to grow living cells (Skloot 30). The two researchers began collected samples from any women at John Hopkins with cervical cancer (Skloot 30).
