As the day fades into late afternoon the man “stepped over the barbed wire into the pasture” (line 7), they are greeted by two Indian ponies, who have “come gladly out of the willows” (line 5) to “welcome” (line 6) the two men. As they meet the “eyes of those two Indian ponies / Darken with kindness” (line 3-4). Wright uses this juxtaposition to deliver more to the reader. Many people read this and think, how are the eyes of the ponies kind if they are darkening. Wright wants his reader to ask this question, and only in solving does one really understand the true importance of the relationship between the animal and the human. This interaction between the ponies and the man is insightful, one which shows how both are longing for a deeper relationship,
