During a Republican Primary debate in 2011, then governor of Texas, Rick Perry proudly stated that Texas had executed more than 200 during his tenure in office, he proclaimed the death penalty to be "ultimate justice" his remarks were met with thunderous applause from the audience. As unsettling as the applause may have been, it is not entirely surprising.
