“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”--John F. Kennedy. Throughout history, there have been many published works and speeches that have led to the shaping of the United States of America. They have also given American citizens their freedom, rights, and responsibilities. As American citizens, we have to uphold these rights and responsibilities. Three responsibilities that I feel each American citizen should follow are: support the Constitution, honor your rights, and defend our country.

The Constitution was brought forth to this nation in the year 1787. This document is considered to be the “framework of America’s system of government” (Constitution). With the signing of this document, it marked our freedom from Britain. Britain at the time was the main central power governing the thirteen colonies. American citizens should support the constitution because without it, we would probably still be under British rule causing distress between the two nations. Also inside the Constitution, there are a list of amendments that U.S. citizens hold close to their hearts.

These are formal statements declaring legal and civil rights to citizens of the United States. Rights declaring such things like free speech, right to vote , right to bear arms, right to speedy trial, and so much more. Although these rights are there for every citizen, Americans need to learn that these rights should not be taken for granted. A lot of these rights would not be in the constitution if it wasn’t for people trying to change the way America was in the past. That is another reason why we need to honor what we have. Now with these amendments, we hold a deeper gratitude to those men and women, past and present, that have fought for these
