During the Middle Ages, due to the religious beliefs, it was thought that mentally ill people were possessed by demonic beings. Treatments included exorcisms, burning, and drowning. There was a small group of doctors that believed that mental illnesses were caused by poor diets and unbalanced bodily humors. When the Renaissance era came around, the science of mental illnesses had started to grow. Some doctors still believed that the followings of Hippocrates were true due to natural causes. Still, witch hunts and executions were very common across Europe. In 1621, Robert Burton published, “Anatomy of Melancholy,” in which he wrote about the psychological and social causes of depression. To treat depression, he recommended diets, exercise,
