“They tell you to do your thing, but they don’t mean it.’’ This quote by Jerry Renault in Robert Cormier’s The Chocolate War is basically saying how being your own person can have serious consequence. This statement is true in both book and real life. It is difficult to be an individual for Jerry because he refused to sell the chocolates.

Being an individual is difficult. In the book The Chocolate War Jerry was the only person in Trinity school to refuse the chocolates. After a while people started to dislike him. For an example Jerry’s personal things were vandalized, he got beat up by some neighborhood kids.
