Labeling Theory is the determination of deviant behavior by one observing deviance, not the person committing deviant acts or behavior, allowing for the shift in defining deviance over time. It is reactionary in its outworking. True story. If James is determined as a student with habitual bad before due to underlying emotional dysfunctions, without receiving the appropriate counseling and or medical assistance, he is more than likely to fall victim to master status. When James is separated from the general population of his classmates, it leads to secondary deviance. He is now fully embracing his deviant behavior in whatever way it manifests. After diagnosis from behavioral specialist in the city, we know that James experiences oppositional defiant disorder, and has no problem letting adults or authority figures that this is why he’s acting the way in which he does.
