1. Named after the Republican, Nelson Rockefeller, The Rockefeller Drug Laws deal directly with narcotic drugs. The Laws led to more drug convictions, but not to less crime in the communities. The Rockefeller Drug Laws were the beginning of mass incarceration. Legislation demanded a minimum of fifteen years for the possession of narcotics. This put even the lowest-level of criminals into the possibility of a life sentence in prison. This was a response to the drug and crime problem that Harlem and the rest of New York were facing.
