First, as we have studied in history this year giving one person absolute power over something never works well, either they become corrupt and oppressive or they focus on other things and become lacking in their leadership. I’m not hating on Mr. Darby but what passes his inspection is purely subjective. What may seem wild or “inappropriate” to him may not may not be that way according to others. Thus we cannot give the Dean or any one person the power over what passes because they could abuse it and it is based off one person’s opinion. Second, absolute enforcement of this policy is completely unreachable, why have a rule when it not enforced? All around the school we are seeing students breaking the code whether by not shaving or having hair that’s too long. To be honest most teachers do not care and only discipline offenders in the most extreme circumstances. Also, Mr. Darby simply does not have enough time in his day to check each person’s haircut, he has more important things to do and this is probably low on his to-do-list. Third, this policy is really unnecessary. There is no true purpose to this policy at Rockhurst, there is no reason listed in the manual and none was given. No haircut is so distracting as to take away from a peers dedication to their schoolwork. Plus, kids express themselves in different way one of which is their hair and by taking this away we are doing nothing for them but only harming our
