In this story, Darkness shows a major part in this story. It’s very much a part of the setting. The house sits on a bed of tarn. When you walk up to the house it’s very dark and creepy. The story starts on one "...dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year...." which gives it right of the bat a very dark plot to the story. The outside of the mansion is the first of many dark and scary settings. There is a dark and scary lake and a giant crack running down the center of the mansion. Also, not to mention, you are in a horror story which make things very dark. One of the titles was “The Haunted Palace”, it was about a warlock who curses a New England village just before being burned alive.
