Stories can often lead readers down rabbit holes due to unreliable narrators. When the storyteller cannot be trusted, it becomes difficult to understand the reality of the situation. In Rog Phillips’ “The Yellow Pill”, there are two characters the story follows. Gar Castle, and his friend Jerry Bocek, have two different realities battling between which is the correct one. Gar perceives himself as a world renounced psychiatrist, named Dr. Cedric Elton, trying to help a patient who thinks he’s on a space ship; however, in actuality, the second character Jerry, is correct in perceiving they are really in outer space and Gar is having delusions. In space, Bocek is very familiar with Helena’s phone number, which explains why he was so familiar with it. In “The Yellow Pill,” evidence supports the idea that these infamous yellow pills were used to get rid of hallucinations and to bring back normalcy. At the beginning of the story, Gar begins to get curious about a different reality. He says to Helena, “‘I can’t get it out of my head the fact that if we had spaceships and if there were a type of space madness in which you began to personify objects, a yellow pill would be the right thing to stop that.’” Gar then went on to explain how the pills “‘almost triple the strength of nerve currents from end organs, What results is that the reality practically shouts down any fantasy insertions. It’s quite startling.’” This explains how the pills can be used biochemically to help with hallucinations. Jerry had a role in promoting the yellow pill when he said, “‘I’m the one who’s at a disadvantage, though. Tied up, I can’t get into the medicine locker and take a yellow pill like you can.
