Modernism, thought to have influenced today’s vision of design. Although, there were complications concerning sustainability issues within relations between nature, place and community. Peter Buchanan has given important aspects and information about these key issues relating from the modernism and post-modernism era onto present’s methods in constructing true sustainability from what is considered not sustainable in the first place.
Looking back at Le Corbusier’s most famous works from the pre-modern and modern era, the ‘Villa Fallet’ and the ‘Villa Savoye’, can explain the contrasts between the two buildings. From this observation, we will clearly understand the unsustainable aspects that moved culture in a way towards a formalistic architecture viewpoint.

As for the exterior, the representational phase of the Arts and Crafts movement considered connecting harmonious relationships with neighbouring homes and nature (p.83). Materials were crucial in communicating the concept of social, cultural, and ecological aspects that architecture is capable of. Although, weathering and stains occurs (p.83), Le Corbusier considered time an important role of his design and this helps establish the materialistic values that correlate with the environment.
The Villa Savoye represents disconnection from context with nature (p.83). The perception of living beyond what controls the natural essence is separated by a notion of sterility, cleanliness and contamination. Indeed, materialistic values played the role of what represents as the International Style, but the attitude it displayed does not nearly emphasize any terms of sustainable
