Role and Functions Paper
Laws are crucial to keeping our society at ease. We have legislation to protect our people and to maintain control of society. Laws protect its people by mandating their rights and preventing people from acting in contrary to laws. Laws are not only binding to its population, but to business operations as well.
Case of Cipollone v. Liggett Group, Inc., et al., 505 U.S. 504 (1992)
Cipollone brought suit against Liggett for violation of several New Jersey consumer protection statutes alleging that Liggett (and other cigarette manufacturers) were liable for his mother’s death because they engaged in a course of conduct including false advertising, fraudulently misrepresenting the hazards of smoking, and conspiracy to deprive the public of medical and scientific information about smoking. Liggett urged the court to dismiss the state law claims contending that the claims related to the manufacturer’s advertising and promotional activities were preempted by two federal laws: (1) the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act of 1965, and (2) the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act of 1969 (Melvin, (2011), Chapter 2, Business and the Constitution).
Laws like the above mentioned are set in place to protect business large or small. Laws are created with the basis to protect both the business and its consumers. Through the laws, the business and the consumer are in balance because there will be a balance of protection to both sides. There are laws that are specially designed to protect the company from other companies. These types of laws are created to maintain ordinance and keep a steady flow of equality among businesses.
Like I mentioned prior, laws play a significant role in society as well. Without laws, our society would be free to act as it wishes, creating anarchy. So the government has created laws to set standards in society. These laws can be represented as rules that our citizens must follow in order to be in compliance with society and the government. These laws create a cause and effect role because if a citizen creates a cause to go outside of the ordinance, there will be a consequential impact on a form of reprimand. Through this system, our society is aware of how the laws are being enforced. Working in the banking industry, I have become aware of many laws that are in place to maintain directive in operations. One of the most important laws is Privacy Law. While conducting everyday business at a bank the employees has access to consumer bank accounts, phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers, etc…, therefore all the employees
