The Greek polis served a very important role in the average greek life. It was the average community during that time, and was built up from small agricultural villages. Citizens spent most of the day in the agora. It was a place where you could buy and sell items, and just talk about events going on. We know that the Greeks were polytheistic, and that religion played a tremendous role in the average Greeks life.
