In the case of the play, Macbeth, manipulation plays a key component in leading to the murder of King Duncan because Macbeth allows Lady Macbeth to manipulate him into killing the king. She knew just what to say to get under Macbeth’s skin, “Will you take the crown you want so badly, or will you live as a coward, always saying ‘I can’t’ after you say ‘I want to’?” (Shakespeare 1.7. 42-44). She knew saying this would cause Macbeth to start questioning his decisions. Since he is a man who is meant to be seen as a strong warrior, his ego couldn’t handle being looked at as a coward. However, although Lady Macbeth called him a coward, Macbeth could have easily stuck to what he believed and focused on doing the right thing. His words show that at a point his morals were in the right place, “By committing violent crimes we only teach other people to commit violence, and the violence of our students will come back to plague us teachers.” (
