Seeing how this was a book intended for school children rather than adults, she was able to demonstrate that this was indeed a part of our history and that it should not be forgotten. During this era African Americans were abused, tormented, and completely tortured by society. They had little to no rights and the law seemed to always turn a blind eye. Atrocious acts would be committed against them on a daily basis and they had no one or nowhere to run to. The world never seemed to be in their favor and they were in constant fear for their lives. There are those after reading this story wonder how something so horrific could have occurred in the past and forget that stories like these continue to occur today.
