T.J’s cheat notes, gone. Stacey was a protective friend, and did whatever he needed to keep his friends out of trouble. When T.J. had decided to make some cheat notes for a upcoming test, Stacey ripped them up, trying to keep T,J out of trouble. Down the pieces went, the mud of the gully swallowing them up. This is proved on page 79, chap 4, when the author wrote “But Stacey turned his back and tore the paper into bits, depositing them in the gully”. Stacey was a good friend, and watched out for the ones close to him. Whatever it took, Stacey kept T,J out of trouble, watching over him. But Stacey was able to find the courage to do this. When a band of white men had ambushed Stacey, his papa, and someone staying with them at the time named Mr, Morrison, while on the wagon, chaos erupted. Terrified, Stacey was given one job: Hold Jack, the mule. In the middle of the night, the only light that of the headlights from the truck the white men had used to catch up to the Logan’s, Stacey held Jack with all of his might. On page 214, Chapter 9, Stacey told his encounter and said “papa told me to hold onto the reins real tight….and Jack was real skittish cause of the storm”.
