To a greater extent, Romanticism was also a response to the Age of Enlightenment. The Age of Enlightenment was responsible for many intellectual movements, the scientific method, and the rise of reductionism- the idea of a whole being the product of its parts. The Enlightenment promoted intellectual and logical processes of thought which were antagonistic to the beliefs of Romanticism.
