Romeo and Juliet is a beautiful tragic tale of two crossed lovers who take their life. There are many motifs in this play that stand out throughout the play, but one that I think stands out the most is assumptions. Throughout this tale many assume another's thoughts and feelings, but the fact is that since we are not mind readers things are not always what they seem to be. This play is filled with assumptions that lead to tragedy and death. For instance, when Friar Lawrence assumed the marriage of Romeo and Juliet would end the feud of the family, how Lord Capulet thought that Juliet was sad about Tybalt's death, and furthermore how Romeo assumed that Juliet was dead. Friar Lawrence is our first victim of assumptions. Friar Lawrence assumed that the marriage of Romeo and Juliet would end the feud between the two families of Capulet and Montague. First Romeo assumes that he is in love with Juliet when i reality he wasn't. As Friar Lawrence said “...Young men’s love,then,lies,Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes...”(Shakespeare p.102) He was only in love with Juliet's looks, but he barely knew her heart at all. Juliet can also be in this category of assumptions because she assumed that Romeo will come and save her from her tomb, but Romeo never got the letter to that would inform him of the plan and so he also assumed that Juliet was dead in real life. All in all, the play of Romeo and Juliet is a story of “a pair of star-crossed lovers that take their life: Whose misadventured piteous overthrows,..”(Shakespeare p.20) As there are many recurring events that stand out in this play an important one is the events of assumptions. Assumptions led Friar Lawrence to marry Romeo and Juliet, it led Lord Capulet to arrange a forced marriage for his daughter, it led romeo to kill
