Ronald Wilson Reagan was born on February 6, 1911. He is famous for being the 40th President of the United States of America. Reagan lived a very interesting life prior to his presidency. He was a governor, an actor and a radio host. He was born in Tampico, Illinois and he began developing his political opinions as a commercial spokesperson for General Electric. One interesting thing about Reagan is that his original political opinions were quite left wing. It wasn’t until the 1950s that he was converted to the Republican Party. Reagan was inspired by his peers to run for the governor of California. After achieving office in the 1970s, he tried to run for President of the United States twice and lost both times. He finally won in 1980 when he defeated President Jimmy Carter. As president, Reagan implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics", advocated reducing tax rates to spur economic growth, controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, deregulation of the economy, and reducing government spending. In his first term he survived an assassination attempt, took a hard line against labor unions, announced a new War on Drugs, and ordered an invasion of Grenada. He was re-elected in a landslide in 1984, proclaiming that it was "Morning in America".
