Corporate Structure
Sony Group is a global leading innovator in electronic products and digital entertainment. To ensure that the corporation is can identify and be responsive with local consumers, Sony Group is currently structured divisionally by geography into three major regions in the Americas, Europe and Asia with major headquarters in Minami-Aoyama, Minato, Tokyo, Japan (Asia), Foster City, CA, United States (Americas), and London, United Kingdom (Europe) (S6). With a vast portfolio of digital entertainment products, Sony structures itself into a set of subsidiaries that specialize in different electronic industries to best match consumer needs. These subsidiaries include Sony Corporation (electronics), Sony Pictures Entertainment (motion Picture), Sony Music Entertainment (music), Sony Financial Holdings (financial services) and Sony Computer Entertainment (computer and gaming). The specialization and organization that this divisional structure provides for the broad corporation of Sony ensures that the company will be able to focus and adapt to stay innovative in all of the rapidly evolving industries that the company competes in (S7).
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) is the subsidiary that handles the gaming developments for Sony Products with the goal of making "a family of products that completely changes the definition of home entertainment". [1] With this goal in mind, SCE handles all major gaming operations including development, publishing, marketing and distribution of consumer-based computer entertainment products. SCE is responsible for providing consumers with the PlayStation console line including the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 gaming consoles, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld, and PlayStation Move interactive motion controller) (S8); these products have given Sony their reputation as a leading innovator in the gaming industry.
Sony Computer Entertainment is lead globally by its president, Kazuo Hirai. Hirai is responsible for establishing games as a significant genre on par with music and movies, promoting the PlayStation brand as an exceptional gaming unit as well as introducing the PlayStation Network (PSN) in 2006 (S9). Despite the notable achievements of Hirai, he is the successor of Ken Kutaragi, meaning that SCE no longer has "The Father of the PlayStation" as their president (W4). Dividing from Hirai as the mutual president, each region has their own CEO and is further departmentalized in a divisional structure under the functions of finance, sales, human resources, publisher relations, operations, legal counsel and product development.
The Finance department is responsible for "all financial operations of the company including general accounting and financial reporting, planning, analysis and systems, treasury and risk management, purchasing, internal audit, and federal, state and local income taxes."[2]
The Sales department oversees strategic sales and merchandising initiatives across all PlayStation platforms in North America including the PlayStation®3, PlayStation®3Portable, PlayStation®2 and the PlayStation®3Network."[3]
The Human Resources department "oversees the company's strategic human resources initiatives including career planning, leadership development, succession planning, talent acquisition and retention strategies." [4]
