Like many in Colombia, he was born into an environment that didn't offer much opportunity. His mother was tragically killed by a resistance group in Colombia, and his father never took responsibility for his child. He was raised by his mother’s sister, a woman of strict religious principles.Unfortunately for my cousin, he was introduced to the world of drugs at a very young age, and they became his Adam’s apple. He started out taking more benign drugs, but begun to consume drugs that were known to cause more harm. At a point in his life, he decided to confess to his family about his addiction, however, Colombian culture condemns drug addicts as sinners rather than people in need of help. According to many family members, my cousin had gotten to the point where it seemed like he would be forever dependent on drugs, and most of them refused to help him. In 2014, he was admitted into the hospital for an overdose on heroin. According to the Mayo clinic 93% of people die from heroin overdose, but against all odds, he survived. Right after his long recovery, he was admitted into a rehab center. Looking forward three years later, Esteban has changed for the better. He has managed stay drug free for the past two years, and his experience encouraged him to become a spokesperson for an anti-drug
