Rose O’Neal Greenhow was born in Montgomery County, Maryland on 1813. She was married to Dr. Robert Greenhow Jr who worked at the U.S. Department of State. Even before the Civil War Rose O’Neal moved in important political circles and cultivated friendships with generals, senators, and high ranking military officers. After the war broke out she was very loyal to the state of Virginia. She believed that the state of Virginia was being devastated by barbarous invaders. Rose O’Neal decided to support the confederate states by providing them with information that could be used in their defense.
