Roselily Roselily is a woman who has three kids and did not have so much luck in relationships in her past. In Alice Walker’s story, “Roselily”, the protagonist Roselily tries to understand the man she has doubts about marrying and wants to start a new life in the process. Roselily has constant thoughts about her past relationships and is very hesitant of whether or not this man could be the right man that will provide help for her and her three children. Roselily is stuck in her past, she’s scared but wants to start a new life. “She wonders how to make new roots. It is beyond her. She wonders what one does with memories in a brand new life.” Roselily has all these questions but can’t seem to find the answer to them. Just like, “This had seemed easy, until she thought of it. “The reasons why. . . the people who” . . . she thinks, and does not wonder where the thought is from.” Roselily is driven to find an answer to get away from her past and she tries anew. “She feels ignorant, wrong, backward. She presses her worried fingers into his palm. He is standing in front of her. In the crush of well-wishing people, he does not look back.” Roselily is trusting this man with her and her kids lives and the man has no regrets of turning back. “She thinks of the man who will be her husband, feels shut away from him because of the stiff severity of his plain black suit.” She glances at a man who she does not know so much at all of. “His religion.” She doesn’t seem to be connected with what he worships. Roselily just has many questions that needs to be answered and her husband-to-be is who she’s looking at. “She does not even know if she loves him.” This shows that Roselily doesn’t feel tied to her husband-to-be, she has many doubts and there will be many obstacles to overcome to feel connected to
