RR1-Klass
Hers is an article by Perri Klass, it discusses an experience of a young female medical student who gives a comical take on the jargon used around the hospital. She starts off being completely oblivious to this whole subculture. But mid-way through the article she is using this language so much that, while she has conversation with her mother it slips out. Ultimately during her first 3 months working as a medical student she learned that these abbreviations and endless jargons are used as a barrier between doctors and patients. Being that doing this type of work is not only physically but emotionally draining this is used as a release. In the end she was glad she picked up on the language to communicate with her colleagues’ better but she notices that she is moving closer to being a doctor than just talking like one.
I believe this essay would fall into the category of a narrative essay, it gives her experiences as a medical student. I think the author’s purpose was to entertain audience because of the comical undertone of the article. This type was used to accomplish the author’s purpose because it was the most effective with this subject matter I don’t feel the other types of essay would have been effective to get the point across.
The thesis of this paper is the entire second paragraph. In this section author basically sums up her experiences when she says ‘If I learned nothing else during my first three months of working in the hospital as a medical student, I learned endless jargon and abbreviations. I started out in a state of primeval innocence…” as she goes on she gives
