Leisure & Recreation: Generational Change?
Leisure:
1. Freedom from time consuming duties, responsibilities, or activities
2. Time for opportunity for ease, relaxation, etc
Recreation
1. Refreshment of one’s mind or body after work through activity that amuses or stimulates
2. Activity done for enjoyment when one is not working
The definition of both leisure and recreation are similar due to both dealing with the topic of time. Time, on how a person should spend it or whether they have that free accessible time.
Although, the difference between leisure and recreation is that leisure is more of a time to relax and to be carefree. Recreation on the other hand is also a time to relax and unwind but doing so with a fun, enjoying activity rather than work. I feel personally that recreation suits my lifestyle more and leisure occurs when I am sleeping. For example, I rather go out hiking than sit and watch television at home.
During the semester I feel as if I have at least 2-3 hours of leisure time a day. I tend to just sit back watch television and other times I would spend it by taking a nap. Like I mentioned above, I feel leisure is a time to relax and the only way to fully relax is to sleep. Especially for college students, like me, we need all the rest we can get. Also another idea I thought about, leisure can also be a time to eat and drink. Most people find comfort in food and/or just simply grabbing a coffee and sitting down in a coffee shop is another way for them to relax. This might be something I would consider myself doing on a weekend, once in awhile before I head to work I like to have brunch with a friend. There I can relax and talk to a friend, and unwind about current events going on in our lives. Other than that I like to spend my time doing recreational activities such as, going for a hike in the morning with friends, go to the gym, catch a movie, or just tag along with a friend while they do some of their errands. One thing I like to do that some people may not find amusing is clean my car or anything to do with cars. Whether it’s doing an oil change or watching someone fix cars, I find interest in learning about cars. Those are how I like to spend my leisure time and I would say I get a fair amount. There are times in a week where I am busy with school work but it all balances out again later. Sometimes I would like to do more in a day but it is hard to fit it into schedule since everything is time consuming. I believe leisure activities define a persons’ identity, including myself. I have gotten feedback from others that I am a chill laid back person who likes to smile a lot and is active with physical activity, that I have positive vibes and people enjoy my company. Hearing this makes me happy because I am a positive person and I like to look at things in perspective as a positive way. I feel that working out and being physically active in activities help releases any stress, it lets’ you think about other things. One of the many healthy ways of living, being able to balance yourself with time for leisure. I had a chance to talk with my auntie about how leisure was for her when she was young. She took me all the way back to her elementary school years to her college years. During her elementary and high school years, she spent her time attending school and going straight home when class was over. She went home right away because she had to help her parents out in household chores, as well as taking care of animals. One of the ways her parents had to make a living was to sell chickens and pigs in the market, so my auntie helped feed the animals and clean the cages along with her brothers and sisters. When the clock hit 6 pm, that is when everyone stopped working, the called it oracion. After the household chores everyone would clean themselves from a hard day’s work and get ready to eat all together. 6 pm was
