Ruby’s Escalation Ruby is the daughter of Kate Ellis, a successful self-help writer in Scott Spencer’s novel Man In The Woods. She gains a more extensive role in the novel as the story progresses, but we notice her transform from a relatively normal third grader, to her meeting with a psychiatrist regarding her strange behavior. Ruby behaves in ways that blurs fantasy and reality and for a while it felt like it didn’t belong in the novel, but by the end, her behavior connects the main conflict that had been developed, with just a few simple words. “There’s a birdy fairy angel on the wall” (Spencer 305). “Lately, with Ruby, everything good is the best, everything at all fetching is the most beautiful in the world” (Spencer 53).
